Pathways Scholar Spotlight: Megan Goulet

May 27, 2018

Why did you decide to apply for the Lime Connect Pathways Scholarship?

As a first-generation college student in a low-income household, my parents are unable to help me pay for my college education. I am completely responsible for all school-related finances so scholarships are important to me. I applied to many scholarships rigorously, however, because I am on the Autism Spectrum, I had a hard time applying for and receiving scholarships since many required interviews and verbal communication skills that I’m still developing. However, the Pathways Scholarship program gave me a chance by judging based on written responses where I could better articulate my story. I have identified myself with many of Lime’s goals, and I am actually planning on using my skills in computer science to help other individuals with differences thrive in society.

How has the Pathways Scholarship supported your college journey?

The Pathways Scholarship has helped me in many ways. Because of this scholarship, I am excited to say that I will not have to take out any private or federal loans this fall semester, which alleviates the common burden of student debt. This has also allowed me to go to my first-choice school, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, for their undergraduate focus, academic rigor, their extracurricular activities, and their research opportunities. Due to this scholarship, I can stress out less about the cost of college and more on my academics and activities. I am currently earning above-average grades in all of my classes, and I will soon start teaching Java to local Troy high schoolers. I am so excited to get involved in RPI’s community, and this scholarship has helped me do that.

What are your career aspirations?

I would be happy in any career that includes the software aspects of computer science. My favorite aspects of computer science, however, are software engineering, artificial intelligence, algorithms, and theory. I am also working on an independent project that, I hope, will help other individuals with Autism find jobs in the future.

What are you looking forward to as a new Lime Network member?

As a Lime Network member, I plan to take advantage of the Lime Connect’s resources that will help me be more successful during college and beyond. I am looking forward to attending the receptions and applying for the other scholarships and opportunities that Lime Connect offers.

What advice or thoughts would you give to someone thinking of applying for the scholarship?

I would tell anybody that is thinking about applying for this scholarship to go for it. When applying for scholarships, there is nothing to lose. The Pathways scholarship can help you pay for college and avoid student debt so you can focus on what really matters such as your experience in college.

Do you have a message for the Lime Connect Century Ride riders and fundraisers who helped fund the Pathways Scholarship?

Thank you so much for making this scholarship possible and helping a disadvantaged community pursue higher education. Your contributions are deeply appreciated.

The Lime Connect Pathways Scholarship is designed for current high school seniors who are pursuing a degree at a four-year university or college in either the U.S. or Canada. Recipients of the Pathways Scholarship each receive $1,000 in support of their university/college studies.

The Pathways Scholarship is funded through proceeds from our annual Lime Connect Century Ride. Find out how you can participate to support next year’s scholarship recipients. Click here to learn more.
